There's fungus in that compost pile. It shouldn't  be surprising, but it is to me. Check it out:

    I get a fungus in my compost pile that normally produces mushrooms, I think my fungus comes around because of the straw that I use, Its almost always the same and it helps heats up the pile really well. In the spring and fall it decimates the straw and leaves a really nice growing material really fast. I've grown in the decomposing straw before and it works fine.
