    Thank you, Damon, for addressing this for me! I will keep on mechanically killing. I think it is slowly getting better. People think us southern gardeners have it so good, but they don't think about the year-round weeds! What do you think about growing a winter squash/pumpkin as a ground cover in a fruit orchard to shade out the grass between trees? The trees are all small still, so the space in between gets lots of sun right now.

    Yes, some kind of ground cover is needed. Have you considered wild thyme or Roman chamomile as a ground cover?
